Nuncio to Ivory Coast dies in car accident

December 10, 2012

Archbishop Ambrose Madtha, the Holy See’s nuncio to the Ivory Coast, was killed in a head-on collision on December 8 while returning from an ordination. His driver was also killed.

Born in India in 1955, Archbishop Madtha was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Lucknow in 1982. Pope Benedict appointed him nuncio to the Ivory Coast in 2008.

The prelate was a voice for peace and reconciliation in the west African nation during the violent civil conflict there in 2011.
